I just adore this picture of Virgine Mouzat, originally featured in Vogue for their annual age issue.  The colors in the photograph are understated, yet elegant, with touches of blue, grey, and ebonized wood. This color palette would be wonderful for a bedroom, don’t you think?!

I love taking inspirational images and turning them into something tangible.  I’m going to show you how I take an image I love, even if it isn’t of a complete room, and turn it into a chic room design!  Let’s get started…

Before I spend a penny, I always decide which elements are most crucial to the design of the room. Then, I search high and low for budget friendly options that look expensive. I then mix and match items to make sure I don’t blow my budget.

1. THE WALLS. They are a very soft white with a touch of blue. Farrow & Ball makes a white that is actually the palest of blues called Cabbage White.

2. CURTAINS. Restoration Hardware makes a luxurious and thick velvet drape in charcoal.  You can get a less expensive version, but still luxe looking option from Pottery Barn – click here to check it out.

3. MARBLE TABLE LAMP. Take a breath, these can be pricey, but worth the investment.

1. Visual Comfort Alabaster Balustrade Table Lamp $629, 2. Visual Comfort Fluted Spire Lamp in Plaster $378, 3. Etsy Carrara Marble Table Lamp $210

4. TABLES.  Depending on the size of your room, you may fit a writing desk or just a small side table beside your bed.  Regardless of size, the most important thing to remember here is that you need a black (or very dark brown) table with clean lines and a bit of a sheen to it.  You don’t want anything too modern or too traditional.  Think chic hotel room in Paris!  Here are a few options I like at different price points:

For smaller spaces, a great option are these nightstands from Williams Sonoma, but you can also get a very similar table from Pottery Barn for only $299.  Another great option for under $200 is this simple table with clean lines and open shelving.

5. BED.  Keep it simple by using a bed or headboard that is tailored and white.  You can get away with using a very inexpensive piece for this and still achieve a very high end look.  I like this one from Ballard Designs.

6. BEDDING.  Pick up some blue sheets that are the color of Virginie’s oversized shirt and keep the rest of your bedding white.  Or you can just add some blue accents to all white bedding like the room below.  It will really pop and give that look of a crisp mens shirt that looks so amazing in our inspiration room!

Restoration Hardware has a good match in both Percale and Sateen called shore.  Or you can pick up some light blue sheets from LL Bean at $64 for a king set!!

7. THE DETAILS.  Pick up a glass vase for some flowers.  Target has a great selection of inexpensive clear glass vases – click here to buy.  I would keep the artwork simple and relaxing, like the room below.
